The Bad Guys Don't Stand a Chance
Texas rancher and lawman John Cronin knows what it means to be tough. A decorated Vietnam vet with connections to law enforcement agencies all around the world, he’s thwarted smugglers and drug plots across the globe with more than a few narrow escapes. Whether it’s a sniper competition or teaching the feds a thing or two about police work, Cronin doesn’t hesitate to pull the trigger. Of course, this slow-talking lawman’s biggest challenge yet might be when his granddaughter Jesse falls in love with a Marine. When drug smugglers stir up trouble in Cronin’s backyard and try to kill Jesse and her new beau, all hell breaks loose, and Cronin and his granddaughter are just the people to set things right.

There seem to be several types of Americans, and I use the term to include all those living in the Americas, that are excluded from proper society. And America was never built on polite proper society - they all stayed in the old country in their security and comfort. Real Americans came here, and built empires and nations, raised generations and questions. It is a very improper constant growth and development.

This book tells the story of many of those types, excluded from the wanna-be-better folks, the politically correct and harmless, kind and fearful modern Americans. This story is about those that live on the edge, trying to get along, make a difference and protect us from the evil, stupid and dangerous.

I will tell everyone this is a work of fiction, a modern day fantasy with heroes and heroines that couldn't possibly live in our real world - except I know a few of them that do and they are very much like the characters in this book. Now for those that are politically correct, for those that think only the experts can handle things, that think Texans aren't human beings, nor good people --- Well this book isn't for you. For you that love living an adventure, page by page never knowing what is going to go down in the end - this is a fine days reading of a life of people that serve and protect, and love. I would wish it were all this easy, but I did notice there was more work than worry, and television and computers were very much like trucks and firearms - only tools to get the job done. The entertainment was in the human activity and contacts. Life under a different set of eyes revealed.

The Grey Man Vignettes edition by JL Curtis Tina Garceau Cara Lockwood Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

Vignettes tells the story of John Cronin, a Special Forces veteran, deputy sheriff, investigator, and overall badass. He is joined by his granddaughter, Jesse, as well as a former Mexican Federale and his wife, two Marines who luck into being a part of their lives, and assorted Texas and federal law enforcement people. It’s a good first book from Curtis, and while it’s not a thriller by any means, it’s a page turner that’s worth reading twice to pick up the things you might have missed the first time. I enjoyed reading the book, even the first time when it was very rough, and I felt comfortable letting Girlie Bear read it. It’s adult enough that it caught and kept my attention, but not so adult that a teenage boy or girl shouldn’t read it.

Vignettes breaks down into three main parts – a sniper competition, a shooting and criminal investigation/persecution, and an overseas mission for Cronin. Holding all of these parts together are several chapters that expand the story to show the everyday life of Cronin and his family. Curtis is an accomplished story-teller, and all of these plots and sub-plots knit together very well. The story includes romance without becoming mushy or steamy, action without becoming bloody, and tension without becoming a soap opera.

Mr. Curtis does an excellent job of developing the characters of Cronin and the other main members of the story. Cronin is the man you meet at the hardware store or restaurant who shows impeccable manners, seems absolutely normal, and then you see flashes of him being much more than he appears. Jesse, his granddaughter, reminds me of the good country girls I knew growing up and while stationed in Texas. Matt and Aaron, the Marines, remind me a heck of a lot of the men that I worked with in the military. None of these characters are straight out of central casting, and none of them are cardboard cutouts of the crusty old deputy, the country hellion, and the generic military man. In other words, Curtis has created characters that live and breathe. These characters will remind you of real people because that’s how they were written.

That’s not to say that the book is perfect. The author’s politics shine through in spots, and occasionally it’s laid on a bit thick. It’s not so heavy that it detracts from the story, but it is noticeable. While his main protagonists are three-dimensional and fully developed, his antagonists tend to be a bit one-dimensional. This is mostly due to the fact that there is no main bad guy throughout the stories in the book, so there is less space to develop them as a character. I expect that if the next book is more of one big story arc, the bad guys will be better developed.

That being said, The Grey Man – Vignettes is an excellent story and read. Mr. Curtis is writing about what he knows and loves, and it shows. I give this one 4.5 stars out of 5, and I recommend it to anyone who likes a good, old-fashioned novel.
Hard to put this book down and get chores done. Great story line about a former Special Forces veteran now serving as a Deputy Sheriff in west Texas. The secondary story lines are equally interesting and have to do with his extended family. The technical details on using gray hues as camouflage were spot on. Not many people understand the art of real camouflage, but this author has it down. Not sure why the price is so low on the book store, but I'm using the savings to buy more of these Grey Man e-books.
I bought this book because I follow the author's blog and I try and support the people I follow.

It sat on my for a couple of weeks before I found it again--which is a surprise because I have like 500 books on my . I was at work and popped it open. Understand that as a paramedic, I work 24-hour shifts. I started reading at 6 p.m. or so with the intention of reading a couple of chapters and then do my evening chores, eat dinner and then go to bed as I always expect to be up all night dealing with various nitwits.

At midnight, I was done. I'd read it straight through. This happens extremely rarely given the number of books I read. Anyway, rather than go to sleep like I should have, I paged back to the beginning and read it again. I suffered the next day at my other job but it was worth it for me.

Since then, I've read it several more times. It isn't high literature--and I have an English degree which means that I can pick out such stuff three out of five times on a good day. But, it is good darn writing, great characters that you care about, technically authentic that was written by someone who obviously knows what the heck they are talking about. The story moves along nicely with no dragging and is quite a good story.

It makes you think, wonder, want to go shooting and want to see whatever this author writes. I'd be happy to pay full price for this author's rewriting of the 1927 NY City phone book as his perspective would probably make it quite good.

For what the author charges for this book, please take a chance, you will be quite surprised.
